This is the former RAF Bolt Head and was set up in WW2. It now only has a 600m Grass Runway 11/29 which has crops on either side. The runway itself is smooth and well maintained with 11 being slightly uphill at its start and windsocks at both ends. The parking area and taxiway are not quite so smooth and care is needed whilst moving from these areas in a retractable, although its quite easy as long as you go slowly. Landing fees are paid by cash or by bank transfer with information available at the little hut marked 'C'. PPR is mandatory and only available through their website.
The website is good and gives all the information required including a Pooleys type plate, runway and circuit information. The airfield is unmanned and you can often be the only visitor. On warm summer days it can get busy and only has limited parking.
The airfield is in a beautiful area and is very noise sensitive, it is important to read the circuit and approach information before arrival/departure. Certain 'noisy' aircraft may not be allowed to visit.
There is a good walk from the airfield across the cliff tops into South Sands which takes half an hour. From there get the Ferry into Salcombe which cost £4.50 per adult (2021 price). To get back to airfield from Salcombe organise a taxi (£12.50 2021 price). The airfield website lists several local taxi companies. Taxis are very popular at peak times and you may have to wait quite a long time for one to be available so organise this well before you need it.
