The nearby international airport has a poor reputation for GA visitors, so this is a much cheaper and potentially simpler option. Spilve is unmanned and typically accessed through uncontrolled airspace - very important to read the AIP thoroughly beforehand. PPR is mandatory for both arrival and departure - a code is issued which must be included in your flight plan remarks section. The arrival/departure routes are quite low level over built up areas with few options for forced landings, and there are masts and harbour cranes to be aware of. The condition of the runways/taxiways is poor, but we didn't suffer any prop chips or other issues. AVGAS tanks/pumps were visible but not in service when we visited. The location is quite close to the city centre - a Bolt taxi can quickly take you to the edge of the city centre but traffic can build up so public transport may be quicker (there is a good bus service which accepts card payments). There is a very reputable Part 145 maintenance shop onsite, and a few larger aircraft were parked up on the ramp alongside gyrocopters.
