Airfield
On a hill with a steep slope one end and cliffs the other for impressive takeoffs and landings. Very quiet airfield: I only saw two pilots in a microlight and I don’t think there’s an aéroclub.
Town
It’s a 30 minute walk into the town of Clamecy. The old town has half-timbered buildings and a couple of museums, only one hotel (Le Relais de la Poste) but plenty of restaurants.
Log driving
It’s the capital of the flotteurs de bois who used to float timber from the forests of the Morvan downriver to Paris. There are statues and a small museum about this, water-jousting on 14 July, and a home-made raft race in August.
Churches
- The 13th century Collégiale Saint-Martin, with a square apse and extravagant gothic tower.
- Notre-Dame de Bethléem, the seat of the bishop of Jerusalem
from the Crusades until the Revolution; concrete in a distinctly Byzantine style.
