Unfortunately since last year handling is mandatory for non-based GA aircraft, cf. AIP 23.1. GA parking space is scarce.
Even so Basel airport is on french territory, it is also a Swiss airport, i.e. it has two ICAO codes LFSB for France and LSZM for Switzerland. This allows flights to the EU and to Switzerland without customs required at the destination airport (no warranty! and obviously only if you have nothing to declare, file the flight plan with LSZM if you go to Switzerland from/to Basel). That makes Basel a good candidate if you want to visit a smaller airfield in Switzerland with no customs or customs PNR.
The airport is open for GA from 0600LT to 2200LT.
ATC is friendly and accommodating. Crossings are typically not a problem, especially if you plan via the official VFR routes.
The bus to Basel city (main station) takes ~15min and Basel is a nice city to explore.
Rental cars are also available.
