Skyservice are running the airport. They must be contacted at [email protected] or +39 0577 314772 / 313117. It now ticks most of the typical boxes but customs and instrument approach:
-After some discussions with the airport on behalf of the GA community, and for this season, costs available to all aircraft under 2tons, for the first day (including mandatory handling ) are now down to 75EUR plus 15 EUR per additional day (vs the former typical 300EUR+) . I support any handling that charges 50EUR or less for a SEP, like this one. It is good value and helps keep our valuable infrastructure available.
-Rental cars available from Europcar, Avis and Hertz, though strictly per advance booking by email or phone since they do not stock cars at the airport.Europcar%2b39 0577288938 [email protected]%2b39 057745085 hertzsiena@gmail.comAVIS%2b39 0577270305 [email protected]
We went with Avis and they did charge a fee for delivery and pickup at the airport. Two days for a family Fiat 500L was 140eur (I never go for zero deductible). Rental car highly advisable when visiting Tuscany. A Taxi can also be pre-arranged.
Very easy luggage- and people- transport direct from airplane to rental car via golf-cart which saves a lot of the typical multiple luggage off-on loading.
-Fuel available via AirBP or credit card, both Jet-A and AVGAS 100LL, the latter at a very reasonable EUR 2.04/lt
-No instrument approach. There is a VOR approach at Grosseto MIL 30nm away that will bring you down to 500ft and then you can fly up the valley to LIRS. ILS into Florence LIRQ also available but beware of serious terrain N of LIRQ. The approach path to LIQS rwy 36 is also reasonably clear for a direct visual approach with GPS guidance. You do need to confirm at least the required 1500 ft ceiling: note the airport sits in the middle of the typical Tuscany hilly terrain.
If you are looking for an airport with full-service, if HJ, and longish hard-surface runway, this seems a much better alternative to the 350eur+ Florence LIRQ, and service is bound to be better for the above reasons.
